Dynamics of Rural Territories and Social Group division

Responsables: Marie-Laure BREUILLÉ et Benoît COQUARD

The research conducted within the "Dynamics of Rural Territories and Social Groups" division aims to better understand the determinants of territorial attractiveness, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas, and to analyze the structuring of social groups living in these spaces. Economists, sociologists, and geographers in the laboratory employ complementary approaches (surveys, ethnography, public policy evaluation, econometrics, modeling) to shed light on major societal issues:

Residential dynamics and their interactions with land and real estate markets:

What are the determinants of residential location choices, particularly the role of (perceived) air pollution and extreme climatic events? What are the effects of public policies (e.g., subsidies, rent controls, the Emile scheme) on the socio-economic profiles of homebuyers, as well as on rents and property prices? What are the social determinants of access to homeownership in rural areas?

The structuring of social groups in rural environments:

How are social relationships evolving in rural areas, particularly with the potential arrival of qualified urban populations post-COVID or migrants from crisis situations? What are the new urban-to-rural mobility patterns at both intra-national and international levels? What are the logics of belonging and the formation of social groups in rural settings? How does this influence worldviews and political attitudes? How is the social status of farmers and self-employed individuals evolving? How are working-class femininities constructed in rural environments?

Ecosystem services and competing land uses under the constraint of zero net land artificialization:

What are the feedback effects of land use choices on climate and the impact of climate change on land yields, carbon storage, and ecosystem services? How can land-use sobriety efforts be fairly distributed among municipalities with heterogeneous land use patterns, urban planning policies, and attractiveness levels? How does socio-territorial socialization contribute to climate awareness?

Territorial inequalities (budgetary, environmental, social), justice, and redistribution:

What role do the spatial organization of economic activities and populations, real estate markets, and public policies play in the dynamics of inequality and well-being? What redistribution mechanisms can reduce disparities between territories and promote rural development? How does the relationship with environmental issues vary across social groups and contribute to inequalities in rural areas?

Public services, politicization, and territories:

What are the consequences of healthcare service closures in declining rural areas? What factors drive general practitioners to leave their profession, analyzed through the lens of working conditions and mental health? How are financial products marketed to vulnerable seniors, and how does material and emotional solidarity manifest among former working-class activists in retirement? What motivates activist engagement (e.g., Yellow Vests movement)? Beyond France, under what conditions do "returns to the land" occur in the United States, and how does worker politicization unfold in Italy?
